The Cowboys held their first padded practice of training camp on Tuesday and there was some good news to come out of it. No, CeeDee Lamb still didn’t show up, and no, neither he nor Dak Prescott has been given a contract extension yet. BUT we did see the return of cornerback Trevon Diggs as well as promising talent from some rookies.

While it’s exciting to have Diggs back on the field after his ACL injury ended his season early last year, he’s still easing back in so the limited reps he saw today weren’t the most thrilling to watch.

The excitement of the day came from players like DeMarvion Overshown, Marshawn Kneeland, and Tyler Guyton. Here are some of the highlights from the Dallas Cowboys’ first padded practice.
Overshown shows potential
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown had to miss his entire rookie season last year due to a torn ACL, but he’s back now and out to prove his potential. He did so today, proving that he’s healthy again and showing off his explosiveness on plays like these ones:

Marshawn Kneeland steps up to the plate
The Cowboys were dealt a devastating blow when they lost defensive end Sam Williams to a season-ending ACL/MCL injury last week. That thrust rookie Marshawn Kneeland into the spotlight and he lived up to the task on Tuesday. But Kneeland didn’t just get reps in at DE – he also practiced as defensive tackle, showing that he is not limited to one position.

Guyton holds his own against Parsons…again
Rookie first-round pick, offensive tackle Tyler Guyton, was promoted to first-team left tackle on Sunday. He was pitted against Dallas’ best edge rusher, Micah Parsons, and was able to hold his own. With the pads on during Tuesday’s practice, Guyton was still able to take on Parsons.
Parsons is one the NFL’s best defenders and even with three guys on him, he’s able to make plays. Yet Guyton was able to stop him in practice on Tuesday, with pads on.

With Tyron Smith out, it may be Tyler Guyton in at left tackle this season.
Unexpected performance by Tyron Billy-Johnson
With CeeDee Lamb sitting out practice, receiver Tyron Billy-Johnson stepped up to the plate, catching a nice pass from Prescott as well as breaking up a potential interception by Nahshon Wright.

But where are the fans??
Despite today being the first padded practice, the stands were unusually sparse in Oxnard, California. Usually the Cowboys don’t have a problem filling bleachers, but the stands were barren during Tuesday’s practice. It’s shocking because the Cowboys are America’s Team, but it’s not shocking because fans are getting understandably tired of Jerry Jones and the Cowboys’ lack of urgency to make smart offseason moves and/or win a Super Bowl.

Other points of note
In other news coming from the Cowboys’ first padded practice, Micah Parsons gave everyone a mild scare when he fell down after a particularly rough hit by OT Chuma Edoga. Thankfully, all seems to be fine with the superstar edge rusher.
